Mining in French Guiana is largely regulated in the same way as in France with only a small number of provisions specific to larger projects in the overseas territory. Though there is a multitude of decrees and ordinances to supplement the Mining Code, all fail to bring sufficient transparency to permitting decisions. Due to ambiguity, ecological sensitivity, local resistance, and illegal mining, French Guiana presents a complex and high-risk setting for large-scale mining projects.
